Irn-Bru Cup First Round – Wednesday Round-Up

Dumbarton 2-1 Rangers U20s

Stevie Aitken’s Sons side won through their Irn-Bru Cup First Round match after seeing off the youngsters from Rangers. It was a former Ibrox youth Calum Gallagher who opened the scoring early on for the hosts, before Mark Stewart got the decisive goal on 49 minutes. Ryan Hardie pulled one back on 72 minutes but it was the Championship side who prevailed to the next round.

Dundee U20a 2-4 Alloa Athletic

An entertaining game at Dens Park saw Jim Goodwin’s men reach the second round. Craig Malcolm opened the scoring early on before Callum Crane – on loan from Hibs – put the Wasps two ahead just prior to the midway point in the first half. Iain Flannigan seemed to put the game beyond doubt in the 33rd minute but Matthew Henvey grabbed a goal for the Dees before half-time Henvey grabbed his and Dundee’s second with eleven minutes remaining but there was to be no shock, with Malcolm grabbing a brace of his own to seal the win in injury time.

East Stirlingshire 1-5 Ayr United

It was a heavily changed Honest Men side who brushed aside the challenge of Lowland League opponents, East Stirling. Leon Murphy opened the scoring in the 26th minute for the visitors before Brian Gilmour grabbed his first goal of the season to double their lead. Derek Ure pulled one back immediately for the hosts but Ian McCall’s side were to stroll to victory in the second half with goals from Craig Moore, Alan Forrest and substitute Luke McCowan.

Motherwell U20s 2-1 Queen’s Park

Gus MacPherson’s side crash out of the cup after conceding two quick-fire goals in this Irn-Bru Cup tie. Former ‘Well defender Adam Cummins gave the Spiders the lead on 29 minutes but it was another defender who pulled the game level – over-age player Ellis Plummer grabbing the equaliser. Only seven minutes later, Adam Livingstone scored the winner and despite time remaining, Stephen Craigan’s young side held on to progress to Round 2.
