Former Hamilton Academical midfielder Grant Gillespie hopes his experience of top-flight football – as well as numerous matches in the league below – will help out his new club, as he takes on a new adventure in League One with Raith Rovers.
Speaking with Isla Todd from Kingdom FM after signing his contract with the Rovers, Gillespie said:
“I am delighted to be here and I’m delighted to get my pre-season started, too. I am now just looking forward to getting going with the games.
I was at Dundee United for 5 months after leaving Hamilton, where I had been for over 10 years. Dundee United decided they weren’t going to be offering me anything after we failed in the play-offs, which was a bit of a kick in the teeth, but, that is football and I have moved on.”
Raith had their own failed play-off bid last term after going down 4-1 on aggregate to eventual winners, Alloa Athletic. Now, Gillespie hopes to go one better as the Fifers aim to get back up into the Championship.
“That is the plan anyway! That is why I came here, to be successful and to go one better than last campaign. I have played quite a number of matches both in the Premiership and in the Championship, so, I am going to hopefully use my experiences that I have gained throughout my career to help the squad out, which will hopefully be to our advantage.
The assistant manager called me while I was on holiday in Dubai last week and once I had spoken to him, I had pretty much made my mind up. The club’s ambition, of which he spoke about, as well as the way they liked to play football, attracted me: it was that conversation that got the ball rolling and thankfully I have now got everything sorted; I am pleased to get it over the line and be here. I haven’t worked under Barry Smith before but I have heard good things about him – he likes to play football the right way. I have had a chat with him and everything seems positive. He likes to work you hard but it is pre-season, so, you expect that. He seems like a genuinely good guy. We haven’t had much ball sessions yet – although I have only been here a couple of days – but, I am looking forward to seeing what other sessions we have in store as we go along.”
